Baroque/English Fingerings for the Recorder in Text Format
Brian Blood

  • We provide two standard fingering charts
    • the first for recorders in C (garklein, descant/soprano, tenor, great bass)
    • the second for recorders in F (sopranino, treble/alto, bass, contrabass)

  • to return to the main recorder fingerings page click here

  • These fingerings are what are called standard 'baroque' or 'English' fingerings, the fingerings you should try first on any recorder that is not described as having 'German' or 'historical' fingering. On some models you may need to add extra fingers where the recommended fingerings is too sharp. One common finger adjustment is the covering of hole 7a and 7b for top D on recorders in C or top G on recorders in F

  • We have provided recommended fingerings for a chromatic range of almost three and a half octaves. This range should not be considered standard for all sizes or makes of recorder. It is usual to expect that a recorder should be capable of playing a fully chromatic range of two octaves and two semitones, that is, up to D in the third octave on a recorder in C, up to G in the third octave on a recorder in F
  • Key:
    • the holes are number from top to bottom - 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6a, 6b, 7a, 7b
    • a indicates the semitone half-hole for the double holes at 6 and 7
    • 0 is a closed thumbhole and x is a pinched thumbhole
    • close indicates that the bottom of the recorder should be closed
